Horse Riding

The dramatic scenery and 600 miles worth of bridleways and trails make horse riding one of the best activities on Exmoor. Open moorland and woodland trails are yours to explore with your hacking group, making

There are a few riding schools around that cater for all levels, such as Burrowhayes Farm Riding School. These schools are a brilliant way for newcomers to get into the groove of horse riding, as well as experiencing our Area of Outstanding Beauty from a different perspective.

You’re best to come prepared to your riding session. Avoid trainers as they don’t offer much grip in the stirrups, and make sure to check the weather ahead of time and pack clothing accordingly.

Exmoor Dark Sky Reserve

A designated Dary Sky Reserve, Exmoor was the first place in Europe to receive this reward. Due to the efforts of many to reduce light pollution in the area, Exmoor is one of the best spots in the entire United Kingdom to look up and soak in the immensity of the night sky.

The core area of the reserve is in the heart of the national park and covers about 83 square miles. Exmoor is also one the only places you can see the milky way with the naked eye, as well as having undisturbed views of better known constellations such as Ursa Major (The Big Dipper) or Orion’s belt.

There are several Hotspots for stargazing, but a few notable ones are Dunkery beacon, Hurlstone Point and Webber’s Post. Be sure to wrap up warm, bring blankets and a thermos filled with your favourite hot drink, stargazing is one of our favourite activities on Exmoor.

Boat Trips

If you fancy a sea experience without getting wet, we recommend you the incredible boat trips that Exmoor has to offer. One of the best ways to experience the dramatic Exmoor coastline, it’s a wonderfully different way to see the Bristol channel.

The waters around Exmoor are home to a variety of marine wildlife, such as Atlantic grey seals, basking sharks, and common dolphins to name a few. The Ilfracombe Princess is a designated marine wildlife spotting boat. They run 1.5-2-hour cruises, so bring a pair of binoculars and get spotting.

For something a bit more hands on you can book a fishing charter. The charters will have you targeting species like bass and mackerel, but don’t forget to dress appropriately for this, as it can get cold out with the coastal wind.

Greencombe Gardens

A seasonal activity on Exmoor but a worthy inclusion is Greencombe Gardens. A hidden slice of paradise in Exmoor, the 3.5 acres of organic gardens have inspired wonder and brought peace to many ever since its opening in 1946.

Open between 1 April and 29th July 2025, the gardens flowers have all been carefully placed to give it its renowned, natural look. The gardens contain Erthyronium, Vaccinium, Polystichum and Gaultheria plants. Greencombe is a place to let your stresses go and be taken away by the atmosphere of the perfect paradise.

No bookings are necessary for individuals, couples or small groups, but please be aware that dogs are not welcome in the gardens.
